I thought some may be interested in a political satire I posted on Youtube last night - first try at this but I imagine I will be doing more - seeing in my humble opinion it worked. Nothing has hit the fan yet but imagine it could. Perhaps this one will do a Susan Boyle... ;D Not sure if this is US humor but it is NZ and AU...

It's on the ongoing saga over parental authority here in NZ which has a referendum coming up in the first two weeks of August.

Nice satire on hypocrisy, Renton.  The humor is the same here as there.  We tend to ham it up (exaggerate) a little more when we do it.  I thought maybe Mr. Morris-Traveller could have exuded a little more moral superiority to really nail the 'experts' down.  But, it works well enough.  Cheers!

I thought this was very well acted and edited. The gestures and delivery were great and your timing was perfect. The pacing and satire captured my attention. I watched it twice.

I decided some time ago that the technical side of any production has to be invisible/transparent so that the message is heard without the slightest distraction from technique of any sort or quality. That is what I am striving for. This is going out into a supercharged atmosphere which make the above doubly important. I think I got there with this. The script took a month to write...Then when I filmed it and began downloading the tape, I realised I had my eyes aimed about 8in (200mm) too low...so had to re do it all again.

Just got an email from Barnardos threatening legal action! ;D

They said it was 'insulting and gross deception' to purport to be a Barnardos employee...

For your interest, the name Dennis Morris-Traveler is a take-off of the name of the woman who is Barnardos 'Childrens advocate', a former member of the NZ Parliament. It would be instantly recognisable to anyone with the knowledge of the chief players in the game...

Oh dear - I wonder if they have thought this through. Our friend Renton in the witness box?!

I don't know the law in NZ, but parody is protected speech in the US.

Apparently it is widely protected here also...you'd have to be blind and deaf to not detect it is satire...

What prompted the concept ??? I understand the issue, just wondering how you settled on the concept, and was it a one shot idea and went forward, or did it more evolve as you got into the project ???

I confess the broad concept was copied from a NZ, now Aussie, comedian commentator, see an absolute classic below.

The thought just popped into my head one day that I could do a similar thing. I had already looked at the website I refer to, seen the bullet points and commented to some friends that they needed to be responded to. In popped this idea one night. I saw immediately how I could do this with myself playing both parts. Originally the interviewee was going to be a woman but without acting or dressing as a woman. Various people raised issues with that idea, so I switched it to being a man. Then I needed somehow to separate the two characters and chose dress as method of doing so. etc etc

Even when shooting I didn't know if I could carry it off. Well I was pleasantly surprised. I've set it up so that I can do other commentaries using the same method - when an idea pops into my head... ;D

For what you wanted to accomplish, I think NOT going on in a dress was a good idea.

Although, had you donned a dress and some makeup and done the interviewee as a woman.... it woulda been hillarious !!!!!

Maybe some time when the issue isn't so important, that might be something to consider.  ;)

Brilliant Renton! Bravo. Clarke and Dawe are funny I and I get to see them regularly on TV here cussing the government over various issues.

You did a perfect job in expressing the issues with a nice hint of comedy added, which I think was or is just as clever as how the Clarke / Dawe thing is put together. You present well on camera BTW, very professional.

It's 7 weeks or so to the referendum so there's plenty of time...

Thought you may like to know that after an exchange of a couple of lawyers letters, Baanaadoze has said they will not be pursuing the legal action any further.  :) A friend has posted a story on a major NZ news site about them dropping legal action and our local weekly paper rang me and are apparently doing a story on it this week. That could help...

My main computers down at the mo and I can't get my next interview done until it's going again. It's giving me more time to hone the script however...it is amazing how scripts can go from being as rough as guts to finely tuned...
