The last 2 weeks have been a nitemare with my internet and network setup. Sad

So it goes like this,,, I have 5 computers (3 desktops and 2 laptops being a dell inspiron and a Toshiba Satellite) all connected to a wireless network router. Then we have an office all in one fax, copier printer etc that is also on the wireless network via wiFi, then there's the PS3 and the WII all connected via wireless as well for online interactivity and not to mention my sons new DSI plus another coming, so my little home network is growing. My computer is basically set up so everyone can access only one of my drives which contains all our family photos,,,, call it a network photo album if you may!

I have access to and mapped all other drives on the network so my machine has full access laugh

Anyway so the other nite (2 weeks back) Everyone gets the hee bee gee bee's with me saying whats happened to the internet?Huh? huh

Our speed had dropped to around 56k to 150k intermittent connection, drop outs all the time
, you know the drill, everyone's gone crappy at me cause I AM THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THIS WHOLE SETUP right angry

So it starts off like this: phone call to ISP, go through all the possible tests at my end and causes still getting 11mbps line sync so it looks great at their end but tech can see me dropping in and out of connection. He does everything he can to find and isolate problem but everything looks ok. Well we lodge a complaint with the phoneline service provider, all good, takes 48hours to do a line check and if its not a fault of theirs I get hit with a $220 call out fee.

OK, so I keep mulling over things, then! I thought, everything is connected wireless, what's gonna happen if I disable my wifi card and connect a CAT5e cable from my ethernet port to the wireless router???
For those of you who thought bingo, back to rock solid lightning fast connection,,,, you guessed right! Wink

So back on the phone to ISP and cancel tech call out, ok, done.

Rack brains for next two weeks meanwhile CAT5e cable is haunting us as the new puppy Ella finds it tasty! She ended up killing to cables so today I thought stuff it, I'm going out to buy a new Wireless modem/router to see if thats it.
Well guess what Huh?Huh??? It didn't flamin do the job, did it angry

I have uninstalled, re-installed drivers, software tried numerous configs and still no avail until TODAY, YES ABOUT TIME TODAY after I go out and spend $110 on a new modem when I should of read an article on 802.11 wireless connections and 2.4ghz electronic devices Embarrassed

So we have pay TV Foxtel HD. In our main living room the HD box is on the Bravia and we have a second independant SD box for the kids down the back room.
From our box we run a 5.8ghz av sender so we can get the signal in our bedroom on the Panny Viera and the boys have a 2.4ghz av sender for their bedrooms.
I disconnect their av sender and bang. bingo, i'm doing a dance! Grin

The flippin 2.4ghz was interferring with 802.11 wireless signal and making it very unstable, so all fixed now,,,, set up the whole network and file sharing and printing and etc etc etc and i've had enough of all this tech stuff and am now as I type drinking BOURBON!!!!!!!

My longest post in a while! Great if anyone can learn from this too!

Later.

Incidently folks, after all this I decided to do some testing to prove bandwidth loss over wiFi.

Download speed over Cat5e is 1.10mbps and over wiFi is around 450kbps so its more than a 50% drop in speed.

Transferring large files from one computer to another is also substantially slower with a drop of around 30%.

This just proves YOU SIMPLY CANT BEAT A CABLE!

My good IT buddy Mark who happens to be an IT/Network guru for Canon Australia got me some Cat6 cable,, i've ordered wall plate with RJ45 mechs in them so next month we are going to hook it all up. Having Cat 6 run will be a bonus as later on we'll change over to a gigabit network.

We'll just use the wiFi for all the gaming consoles we have and for the network printer and have all the PC's running on 100mbps LAN.

Seeing how you have solved all your network mysteries and probably no longer have any reasons to crack open any more bourbons.... I know of a web hosting company you might wanna try if you ever decide you are getting a bit thirsty.    Cheesy
