My and wife and I will be over Australia in Oct for 4 weeks going to the Great Barrier Reef to shoot some photos underwater - than onto Hervey Bay where she will shoot Photos hopefully of Humpback whales with their new born calfs with her Canon Rebel XTi and XT. I will try to shoot videos of the Humbacks with my HV30 Canon - than onto the Gold Coast - Shaun - I do not think we will be getting close to Melbourne - need some place to visit - can you give any suggestions on good photo spots around the Gold Cost - than onto Mooring (places here also) for a week and finish down by Syney.
This is the longest vacation we have ever taken 8 total weeks - the next three weeks will be in New Zealand :1 week south Island - 2 weeks in the NOrth Island - and the 8th week (the last week) in the French Polynesian Island of Tahiti. Coming home Dec. 8th. All time share weeks.
A have only been to Geelong, Australia - Isn't there a poisonous frog there also.
I saw the biggest kangaroo in my life on the golf course with his harem (75)- his forearms were bigger than my thighs and stood over 7ft. tall.

Hey mate,
Sounds like you'll have a great time. I've been to the Gold Coast a few times, it is a touristy part of QLD. Lots of theme parks, Wet N Wild, Movie world, Sea World, a few more I think, awesome beaches, lots of world class surf spots, lots of sharks in the water!!!
You should have fun. As far a photo and video ops, well its all a bit reptitious up there. The coastline is basically identical for miles and miles, sand surf and Hi Rise apartments.
As for Hervey Bay, its beautiful, colorful and scenic and if you get a chance to se the whales you'll be blessed!!! There is far more video and photo stuff to do at Hervey Bay if your into the nature thing!

I was in Hervey Bay almost exactly a year ago with my GS300, heres a short clip for you!

Anyway if you manage to get further south than Sydney, let me know. Melbourne is way nicer than Brisbane or Sydney anyways, dunno why you wouldn't make it here???

Cheers Shaun

Very, very nice, Shaun!  There were quite a few shots in there that were really excellent.  (I mean it was very, very good overall, but some individual shots were simply superb.)

See, you really didn't need to spend all that money on the DVX -- the GS300 did just fine for you.

While I agree that there were some really nice shots there , I personally think the DVX doing the same shots would have looked much richer and not as washed out. Probably that was your point Tim (I think) but I'm not always good at judging whether something was meant to be humerously sarcastic or not on the net.

The GS cams do fine up to a certain point. My DVX has such nice Bokeh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh its not funny. And dynamic range, and cinegamma curves and the list goes on, and with 1/3" sensors and a 72mm lens and 25p native shooting they simply don't compare.

Well, looks like the family and I will be making another trip to Australia on July1st. This time it will be to live for at least  3 years. It's been crazy lately trying to get this house ready to rent out. All the projects half done over the last 13 years have to be completed now. Were trying to sell everything off as fast as we can and giving away what we can't sell. I have to send my camera in to Canon to have the firmware upgraded to include Pal if I hope to do any video work there. Although quite scary...it will be nice to make a new start. Wish me luck guys!

OK, Ed, I'll do just that - Good Luck! We envy (in the nicest way!) your opportunity. We've been lucky to have had a couple of good visits there, and continuous family contacts; enough to know that it's a great country with great people. Where are you going to be based? Was it Adelaide last time? I'm sure we all look forward to getting frequent news reports.

Gosh Ed, that's a long way to move, but I guess it's one of those career things...

Good luck!  I would like to say 'give me a call if you need help' but not sure how I could help.  But I will keep good thoughts for you and the family....

Ed's too busy to be doing a countdown for us, I'm sure. He hasn't told us his intended base yet but perhaps you'd watch out for him at Tullamarine, Shaun? Let us know if he turns up?!

Hey Granpa, I know exactly where he's going. His flight will take him into Sydney and then they'll grab a flight from there to Adelaide. Ed and his family are going to be living North of Adelaide in a nice cosy quiet country suburb. He'll be around 8 hours drive from me.
