Sony Vegas vs. Edius Question

<< < (3/3)

timlan635:
Vegas Movie Studio used to only allow 4 video tracks and 4 audio tracks.  That was one of the main reasons I moved up to Vegas Pro -- it's easy to use up more than 4 tracks just doing titles or lower thirds over a regular video.

However, a couple versions back VMS was bumped up to now allow up to 10 video tracks and 10 audio tracks.  Make sure that at the very least you get the "Platinum" edition.

The Pro version does definitely add some nice improvements, but VMS is a very capable package as it is.  Here's a comparison:
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudiope/compare

Some of the things the Pro version adds are indeed very "pro" features -- like vector scopes, histograms, etc. -- those kinds of displays that look like something a TV broadcast engineer would need.  I know they are very, very useful things to professionals, but I have only a vague understanding how they work and I'm not really that advanced.  (but they looked cool for the few minutes I tried them out...)

Other things that are in Pro but not in VMS are application scripting -- where people can write "extensions" to Vegas, to automatically export things, automatically adjust or re-arrange things, etc.-- and project nesting.  With nesting, you could work on a big project in pieces (like "chapters of a book"), then create a master project and bring in all the individual pieces onto a master timeline.  Also, pro has Bezier Masking -- where you can draw a cutout mask on video or a photo, etc.

Earlier this summer, Adorama was selling Vegas Pro, full version with DVD architect, for $280.  That wasn't an upgrade price -- that was a full purchase price -- for a limited number of copies of a "slip sleeve" version of Vegas (no box, etc., just the disc in a cardboard sleeve).  I think B&H also had a similar deal -- but nobody seems to have it now.

Thanks, Guy, Chris and Tim -

I'm in a "down time" with my video right now so I'll give all of this some thought. I'll probably download a trial version.

Thanks again for the responses!

Chris Harding:
Hey Tom
I just did a Realty shoot where I put the cam into 1080i mode and HG mode which is 13 mbps (that's all that is required) The i7 and Vegas 10 render this footage from AVCHD to SD MPEG2 in less than half the length of the clip and the quality shoots up too!! (6min clip of a room renders in 3 mins or less!!) Before this I had to transcode AVCHD to AVI (a good 45 mins) and then render the AVI to MPEG2 (another 45 mins)  Today I did the complete job in 20 minutes!!!
I would download the trials of both 10e and VMS 11 Platinium and see which you like better...another small point I noted on Chis Hurd's forum is that the Edius forum has very few vistors and the Vegas one is always busy ...that means that more people are using Vegas so you have more help if you get stuck....just for a start you have Guy the Guru here to assist!!!!! (and me and Ron too and many others) whereas I  think you are the only Edius user here!!!  It helps to have friends who can assist when you hit a blank wall!!!

Chris

Tom Dickerson:
Thanks, Chris.

I really don't have any issues with Edius other than lack of community support and plug-ins etc. I have also noticed that Edius has a relatively small community on the forums.

Every email advertisement I get features products for Premiere or Vegas - almost on a daily basis. I don't know that I would use most of them but it's nice to know they are available.

Like I said in my last post, I'm in a slow time for my video work right now. I am subcontracted to a few small companies for other things and video hasn't been requested in a while.  In the meantime I've taken on part time work in retail to add a few dollars to the family income.

In the next few days I'll download a trial version and see how it feels.

Thanks again,

Tom

Laszlo:
Hi Tom,
Though it looks like no one except you uses Edius here but I frequently do. I have no idea of what your program is like (mine is Edius 6) but it provides quite a number of effects, etc. And works with AVCHD. While certain things can be done only through some workarounds and I am not completely satisfied with it (for example the missing option to replace a clip with another one on the timeline by using a menu, like in Premiere, for example).
This message is just to show you that you are not completely alone...
Cheers,
Laszlo
