5 x 7 foldable Green Screen
« on: January 30, 2012, 06:55:24 AM »
Since I no longer have the use of my home-studio, I thought I might purchase one of those foldable 5 x 7 green screens. Digital Juice carries them, B&H, and many others - but all seem to have similar reviews.

Does anyone have any experience with a particular brand and source?

I'm looking at spending $50 - $100.

O.K.  It's been over 24 hours and no takers on this one. :(

If anyone is interested I'll report back in a couple weeks on what and where I purchased.

Hi Guys
Ebay has some very neat backdrop stands which means you don't get any folds in the screen..essentially they are two lighting stands with a pole that goes across and your screen rolls down...that's what I would go for and it folds up into a tiny pack too!!  Added advantage is that you can also use it for photo backdrops.

Thanks Chris.  I've seen those, but they are not what I am looking for. I'm looking for something like this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/303024-REG/Botero_C02657_026_Collapsible_Background.html

Several shops carry them, but from different manufacturers. Does anyone have experience using a particular brand? I know some may hold wrinkles worse than others and some are more "flimsy" than others.

I do like the idea of having a stand when needed like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/571441-REG/Impact_BGC_CBG_57K_5x7_Collapsible_Chroma_Blue_Green.html

I don't mind paying around $100 for it so long as it's a fairly good one.

Hi Tom
If you just want to do single talent shots (like your previous ones of Cherie) then that should be plenty big enough. Those also have a stretch frame so the fabric is taut without any wrinkles.
As long as you don't need a group shot I would grab one of those ones..That's a good price for just under $120!!! and will pack down into almost nothing!!!  A friend of mine built his own using blue lycra and found an advertising display stand that tensioned the lycra too ....but by the time you buy the fabric and the frame and a boom stand it will probably cost almost as much!!
I say just go for the B&H one!!!

Tom,
I typically use a queen sized bed sheet for my green screen.  Vegas does a good job of removing uneven lighting/wrinkles if you play with it a little.

Thanks for the reply, Guy.

I also used a bed sheet when I had use of my home studio. I found a green sheet at Target that worked pretty well. The last few web devotionals we did were shot on green screen, including the Christmas Story.

I am attracted to using the portable fold up kind to be more portable. With this type I can fold it back up, put it in its case, and stow it away in the closet. However, I am very concerned about wrinkles and am afraid I'll purchase something that is junk.

Chris mentioned using a stand. I kind of like that idea, but want to keep things small and portable.

Cherrie and I hope to resume shooting soon. We have a web ad for her company to do as well as shooting some more video devotionals for her website and all the sharing sights we use to post to.

I have one I purchased from one of the video supply outfits (can't remember which).  They are permanently mounted on a foldable metal frame and generally come with a storage pouch.  The frame when unfolded (don't get in it's way while it's coming open, it's under tension like a spring) "snaps" the fabric taut and there should be no problem with wrinkles.

I have a problem getting it folded back (works kind of like the windshield sunshields that twist & fold), only way I can do it myself (I'm 73 now) is to place one end in a corner at floor level  then push and twist.  Once folded you can't let go till you get it back in the bag.

Unfolded you can set it on a table or on a chair and lean it up against the wall, or clip it to a stand somehow, but I just lean it where I need it.  No wrinkle problem.
