Four suggestions on GeoffSOz 40db attenuator.
1. put the attenuator as close as possible to the camcorder, so that it will also attenuate any noise picked up from your cable.
2. put a ferrite core on each end of the cable for the same reason.
3. if you're using a GS500 or other camcorder that provides DC plug-in power to the mics, put a 1 uf capacitor at the Line Level end of the cable as the last thing, to block that from going into the output stage of the audio source
4. I've found 40db is too severe on a lot of boards, perhaps this is because of my long cable or the internal impedance of the GS500/ but anyway, the resistors I use are more like 150 ohms and 6.8k
I still have not found a cheap easy way to adjust the attenuation, other than a 10K pot but they interoduce such terrible scratching sounds when adjusted, I am desperate for a better solution.Since the GS500 cannot adjust its gain without stopping the camera and futzing with the menu screens.
