Canon T2i .mov file conversion

Even though it appears my NLE and computer will handle the .mov files for a few clips, I doubt (from what I read) it will do very well on a complete video of any length.

I just experimented with MPEG StreamClip and Rad Video tools.

I started with a 255MB .mov file.

Streamclip successfully created a 1280x720 .avi file at 1.52GB (yes GigaBytes).

RadVideo successfully created a 1280x720 .avi file at 4.00GB!!!

Yes, these free software programs will convert .mov files from the T2i, but that much growth in file size just isn't worth it to me.

It sounds like Cineforms Neoscene will also convert these, but with how much growth in file size?

Looks like I'm in the same boat as you.  I use Sony Vegas Pro 9.  It seemed to handle a few clips OK and playback fairly smoothly but as soon as I started applying fx and colour correction, forget about it.  Vegas crashed a few times and it never does that.  I also couldn't get Magic Bullet Looks to show any preview, if you use that plugin.

So I'd be interested in seeing how Neoscene performs as well.

It would be expected that a compressed file such as .mov would be much bigger when converted to an uncompressed AVI file. Even if you use a lossless intermediate codec such as HuffYUV or Lagarith it would be.

My new cam produces .mts files. Like you I have been playing around with converters and producing much larger files, even though Vegas Pro 9 will edit them natively, because some people recommend to always transcode first. Hopefully after tomorrow I will have enough files to give it a good test.

I'm sure you have told us before, but what NLE do you use?

I just downloaded the trial version of Cineform NeoScene. I converted a clip and it appears to have only doubled the file size - from 255MB to about 500MB.

However, when I drop it on the timeline in Adobe Premiere Elements 4, it only shows as bright green in the player window. The audio sounds fine though.  Adobe Premiere Elements 4 and NeoScene must not play well together.

O.K. I tried everything. Did several re-renders and still solid green for video....although it shows up in Nero Vision, although it plays very rough on its timeline.

Can't seem to really find anything on searches either....Don't know if I need a codec installed on an Adobe folder or what.

Any ideas?

In its specs, Cineform says Neo Scene is for Adobe CS3/CS4, Sony Vegas and Movie Studio.  Also, it requires 3 GB RAM.  I don't know if PE4 or 8 qualify as CS3/CS4, but I suspect not.

A person on another site said he used it with Adobe Premiere Elements so I thought I would give it a try. It's strange it works in Nero Vision, albeit slow.

I filed a support ticket with Cineform. If they confirm it won't work with either Adobe Premiere Elements 4 or 8 I might just have to shell out money for both Vegas Movie Studio and NeoScene.  Seems ridiculous though, just to edit .mov files.

If my new computer (the I5, 860 Dell Studio) with Adobe Premiere Elements 8 will handle the .mov files on the timeline I might just leave it at that for now. I don't foresee me doing a lot of HD work in the near future anyway...especially if it's going to be this much trouble.

The Cineform tech told me Neo Scene was not compatible with Adobe Premiere Elements 4 and asked if I had considered upgrading to version 8. I replied yes, that I own version 8 but have not installed it yet.

The rep said to uninstall Neo Scene and then install Adobe Premiere Elements 8 before installing Neo Scene and let him know how it goes...

In the meantime I conducted a few more experiments with MPEG Streamclip and found that if you set it at 70% for quality it does a pretty good job and only grows the file to about 150% (as in 200MB .mov file becomes 300MB .avi file).  I am not sure if the quality setting degrades the footage or not...but to my eye 70% looks pretty close to the .mov file in quality.

Anyone else played around with this?

I have just bought Canon7D recently, but it captures videos in H.264/MOV format, which is not a workable format in my editing software Magix Edit Pro 14.

Cineform Neoscene $129,so i gave it up.

Hi Kate and welcome to CamcorderUser.Net! 

A free transcode utility that works very well is MPEG Streamclip.  Often, transcoding AVCHD (MPEG4/AVC) into uncompressed video makes it easier for almost any NLE to edit.  And, uncompressed can be edited by all the NLEs.  Also, uncompressed video provides less deterioration of the source video if you will add FX or do color grading.  I recommend using a lossless codec like Lagarith (free download) to keep the uncompressed file sizes from becoming excessively large.

My wife has just bought a Canon EOS 550D (Rebel T2i), so I did a quick video test.

If it's any help, Neo Scene will convert the .mov files perfectly and they import into Vegas no problem (unlike .mts files from my HF S100 which Cineform Technical are still trying to sort out). I can't comment on PE4, I've never used it.

The Cineform people told me that Neoscene will work for my HMC40 and my T2i on Adobe Premiere Elements 8. Back when I posted that thread I was still on PE4.

Adobe PE8 (with installed Adobe patch and another custom patch) actually handles both file types natively on the timeline using my Dell Studio I5. It's fine for family videos, but I know when I get back to multitrack editing I will need NeoScene.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to render a HD video to DVD that's playable in HD on my BD player. I'm close, but not quite there yet. I know others are doing it, but I can't find any threads on any site that is specific to Adobe PE8. I have been referred by MSmart to Elements Village. I will post there next week.
